When Matthews had to make a forced landing after an engine failure in one of the Qantas F.K.8s,55 near Blackall on 13 September, the machine suffered major damage to the undercarriage, wing and propeller. With other machines out of action, the repaired Bristol Fighter was the only aircraft in the main fleet able to fly from Charleville. In 46-degree heat, Fysh was forced once again to fly the Longreach–Cloncurry run in the old Avro, with his only passengers being two four-gallon (eighteen-litre) tins of petrol. For most of the flight he kept the aircraft at just 500 feet (160 metres) because of the thin air higher up. He wouldn’t ask Haig or Matthews to fly the old plane, although he logged more than forty hours in it over the next two months.56
